High blood sugar affects the kidneys as they attempt to process overall blood sugar. When they fail to deal with excess sugars, they are expelled into the urine.

The excretion of blood sugar removes fluid from the tissue cells through the osmosis process.

As a result of this, there is a feeling of dehydration, dry mouth, thirst and that is why a lot of water is required.
